We are now entering the most important week of the Church’s liturgical year. This week is called “Holy Week”. The sacred Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are the most sacred days of this week. The word “Triduum” means one celebration that lasts for three days. It is the custom for Catholic Christians to make the sign of the Cross before and after their prayer. The Mass begins with the sign of the Cross, and the Mass ends with the final blessing. The Mass on Holy Thursday begins with the sign of the Cross. The final blessing is given on Holy Saturday night.
It is in this Triduum that we celebrate who we are as Catholic Christians and who we are as a parish. The Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ are made present through very powerful symbols, prayers and ceremonies. The Triduum is an experience that can only be celebrated once a year because there is so much to digest and meditate.
Those who want a very fast Mass obviously should not come, because the Triduum is a long living medtiation on the foundation of our Faith. The Mass on Holy Thursday will go about one hour and a quarter. Good Friday will go for one hour and a half. There is a procession after the Service that is optional. No one has to stay for that procession because it is not part of the official celebration for this part of the Triduum. That procession will last an hour. Holy Saturday will last for one hour and a half.
How wonderful it would be if the parish leadership participated in our parish Triduum. The members of the Parish Pastoral Council, the members of the Parish Financial Council, the Domingas, the members of the various parish groups and parish ministries, the members of St. Michael and Faith Formation are encouraged to come to make this a parish celebration. All parishioners are encouraged to come. Then we can truly renew our baptismal promises.
Estamos prestes a entrar na semana mais importante do ano litúrgico da Igreja, a chamada Semana Santa. O Tríduo Sagrado da Quinta-feira Santa, Sexta-feira Santa e Sábado Santo são os dias mais sagrados da semana. A palavra “Tríduo” significa uma celebração que dura três dias. Os cristãos católicos têm o hábito de fazer o sinal da cruz antes e depois das suas orações. A Missa principia com o sinal da Cruz e termina com a benção final. A Missa da Quinta-feira Santa começa com o sinal da Cruz. A benção final será dada no Sábado Santo à noite.
É durante esse Tríduo que celebramos, quem somos, como Cristãos Católicos e quem somos como paróquia. A Paixão, Morte e Ressurreição de Cristo tornam-se presentes através de poderosos símbolos, orações e cerimónias. O Tríduo é uma experiência que só pode ser celebrada uma vez no ano, por ter muito que digerir e meditar.
É óbvio que todos aqueles que gostam duma Missa rápida, não devem vir às cerimónias, porque o Tríduo é uma meditação viva e longa sobre os alicerces da nossa Fé. A Missa da Quinta-feira Santa durará, mais ou menos, uma hora e um quarto. As cerimónias da Sexta-feira Santa levarão uma hora e meia, havendo depois a Procissão do Enterro do Senhor que é facultativa. As pessoas não têm de ficar para a Procissão porque não faz parte da celebração oficial do Tríduo desse dia. A procissão leva uma hora mais ou menos. No Sábado Santo ou Vigília Pasca,l as cerimónias durarão uma hora e meia.
Seria maravilhoso se todos os líderes da paróquia participassem no Tríduo Pascal Paroquial. Encorajamos os membros dos Conselhos Paroquiais: Pastoral e Administrativo, as Domingas, os membros de todos os ministérios e outros grupos da paróquia, os membros de S. Miguel e do Programa de Formacão na Fé, a virem às cerimónias, tornando-as assim numa celebração paroquial. Todos os paroquianos são convidados a virem fazer parte desta celebração para podermos, verdadeiramente, renovar as promessas baptismais.
THE SPIRIT OF CATHOLIC FAITH IN THE TRIDUUM
The word “Catholic” means universal. We can experience this when our whole parish gathers. The need to use the two languages of Portuguese could cause frustration or it could lead us to experience the universality of our Faith.
We do have universal words and signs that bring us close together. The word “Amen” will be used on the three days. The universal word “Alleluia” will help us to celebrate the Risen Lord in our gathering. The universal sign of darkness and light; the washing of the feet; the veneration of the cross and the ringing of the bells help us to be united in this sacred three day celebration of our salvation.
It depends on the attitude and openness of each person. It is hoped that the triduum will be a celebration that will bring our people closer to each other.
ESPÍRITO DE FÉ CATÓLICA DURANTE O TRÍDUO
A palavra “Católica” quer dizer universal. Podemos experimentar essa sensação quando todos os paroquianos se encontram reunidos. A necessidade de usarmos as duas línguas, o Português e o Inglês, tanto pode causar alguma frustração como nos pode levar a sentir a universalidade da nossa Fé.
Nós usamos palavras e sinais universais que nos unem mais uns aos outros. A palavra “Amem” será usada durante esses três dias. Aleluia, outra palavra universal, ajudar-nos-á a celebrar o Cristo Ressuscitado quando estivermos reunidos em assembleia. Os sinais universais de luz e escuridão, o lava-pés, a veneração da Cruz e o repicar dos sinos e campainhas ajudar-nos-ão a manter-nos unidos durante esses três dias sagrados em que se celebra o mistério da nossa salvação. Depende muito da atitude e abertura de cada pessoa.
Esperamos que o Tríduo Pascal seja uma celebração que una cada vez mais o nosso povo.
Holy Thursday
The purpose of this celebration is not to re-enact what happened at the Last Supper. At the washing of the feet we are not restricted to just washing the feet of twelve men. At our washing of the feet we will invite children, men and women to participate. We will have more than twelve people. The washing of the feet is a sign of service to one another. At this celebration we will welcome the three Holy Oils that were blessed by the Bishop on the Tuesday of Holy Week. The Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens, and the Oil of Chrism will be placed at the altar. After the adoration time the oils will be brought to a place of honor near the baptismal font.
Quinta-feira Santa
A intenção desta celebração não é apenas pôr em cena o que aconteceu na Última Ceia. No lava-pés não estamos restringidos a lavar os pés a doze homens. Nós tencionamos convidar crianças, homens e mulheres. Teremos a participação de mais do que doze pessoas, porque o lava-pés é um sinal que significa estarmos disponíveis a servir uns aos outros. Durante esta cerimónia receberemos as âmbulas com os Santos Óleos benzidos pelo Senhor Bispo na Terça-feira da Semana Santa. O Óleo dos Enfermos, o Óleo dos Catecúmenos e o Óleo do Crisma serão colocados sobre o altar. Depois do tempo de adoração, os Santos Óleos serão transportados para um lugar de honra perto da Pia Baptismal.
GOOD FRIDAY
The focal point of this day in our parish will be the Service that will take place at 7 p.m. One focal point of the service is the Cross. Parishioners are invited to come and venerate the Cross without wearing their shoes
This is taken from the Old Testament when Moses approached a burning bush and went closer to see how the flames were not consuming the branches of the bush. As he approached the burning bush, he heard the voice of God say: “Moses, take off your sandals. You are standing on holy ground”.
An addition to the Service on this day is the funeral procession of the Lord. Parishioners will be told that they can leave the church after the Service. They are invited to stay for the funeral if they would like. There will be a ten minute interval between the completion of the liturgical service and the beginning of the funeral procession. The interval is to allow the procession to be organized and formed.
The funeral procession consists of bringing a statue of the Sorrowful Mother and a statue of the Lord in a coffin. Lanterns accompany each statue.
A woman dressed as Veronica will sing three times in Latin holding the linen towel with the face of Jesus imprinted on it. (This is taken from the Stations of the Cross that present Veronica wiping the face of Jesus.)
Around the Service we have the arrival of the “Romeiros” in the morning. Romeiros are those people who will dress as pilgrims and visit the churches in Fall River. They enter each church to sing and pray. They are dressed as pilgrims with a staff. When they reach our church in the morning, and after they have prayed in the church they will go to the hall for coffee and for an opportunity to meet the parishioners.
Another element of Good Friday is what is called the “The Paschal Fast”. The Church asks Catholics to abstain and fast until midnight. However, parishioners are asked to continue the fast until the beginning of the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday at 7 p.m.
SEXTA-FEIRA SANTA
Este é o único dia do ano litúrgico em que não há celebração da Santa Missa. O ponto central desse dia, na nossa paróquia, será o Serviço Litúrgico que terá lugar às 7:00 horas da noite, tendo como foco principal, a Cruz. Convidamos os paroquianos a virem à Igreja e a tirarem os sapatos antes de veneratem a cruz.
Esta passagem é tirada do Velho Testamento quando Moisés ao chegar perto da sarça ardente, reparou que o fogo não consumia os ramos do silvado. Ao aproximar-se, ouviu a voz de Deus que dizia: “Moisés, tira as tuas sandálias, porque o terreno que pisas é sagrado”.
Para além do Serviço teremos a procissão do Enterro do Senhor. Terminado o Serviço Litúrgico os paroquianos poderão sair da Igreja, mas se quiserem podem ficar para o Enterro do Senhor. Haverá um intervalo de 10 minutos entre o final do Serviço litúrgico e o princípio da procissão do enterro, para que se possa organizar e formar a procissão com as imagens de Nossa Senhora do Pranto e o esquife do Senhor, com lanternas a acompanhar cada imagem.
Na manhã de Sexta-feira Santa, como parte do Serviço Litúrgico, teremos a chegada dos “Romeiros” que se vestem à laia de peregrinos, levando um bordão na mão e que visitam as Igrejas de Fall River, entoando cânticos e orações em cada uma. Depois de rezarem na nossa Igreja, dirigir-se-ão para o Salão para tomarem um café e conversarem com os paroquianos.
Outro elemento da Sexta-feira Santa é o chamado “Jejum Pascal”. A Igreja pede a todos os Católicos que, naquele dia, se abstenham de comer carne e jejuem até à meia noite. Todavia, pede-se aos paroquianos que, se possível, prolonguem o jejum até ao início da Vigília Pascal, no Sábado Santo às 7:00 da noite.

Vai haver dois ensaios para aqueles que gostariam de ser Romeiros: 27 de Março, 2012 e Terça-feira, 3 de Abril, 2012 no Salão da Igreja do Espirito Santo às 7:00 horas da noite.
HOLY SATURDAY
On this day the Church spends time at the tomb. There will be no 4 p.m. Mass on this day. There will be no confessions.
The most sacred part of the triduum begins on this night at 7 p.m. The celebration is about light and darkness, water and Alleluia. The Easter candle is brought into the church as a sign of the Risen Lord. The Gloria is sung as a sign of the joy of the resurrection. Alleluia is sung for the first time as a sign of rejoicing.
The culmination of the Lenten Season is expressed in the renewal of the Baptismal Promises. The people are sprinkled with Holy Water as a sign of the Sacrament of Baptism. New Easter water is blessed for people to take home. This Easter water will be used in the Sacrament of Baptism.
With this celebration the Easter Season begins for fifty days and ends with the Feast of Pentecost. The Easter Candle is placed near the lectern as a reminder of this season.
SÁBADO SANTO
Neste dia a Igreja debruça-se sobre o sepulcro. Não haverá Missa às 4:00 da tarde. Não haverá confissões nesse dia.
O Tríduo Pascal e o que nele há de mais sagrado, principia neste dia às 7:00 da noite. É uma celebração de luz, escuridão, água e Aleluia. O círio Pascal é levado para a Igreja como sinal do Cristo Ressuscitado. O Glória é cantado como sinal da alegria da Ressurreição. Canta-se Aleleuia, pela primeira vez, em sinal de júbilo.
A estação da Quaresma culmina com a expressão da Renovação das Promessas do Baptismo. Aspergem-se as pessoas com Água Benta como sinal do Sacramentodo Baptismo. A nova água da Páscoa será benzida para ser usada nos Baptismos e para as pessoas que queiram levar alguma para casa.
Com a Festa da Páscoa dá-se início ao Tempo Pascal que dura 50 dias e que termina com a Festa do Pentecostes. O círio Pascal será colocado perto do ambão como recordação desta estação.
Scheduling of Intentions for Masses & Lamps for 2012
The Mass book for 2012 was open beginning Thursday, December 08, 2011 and will remain open for all of 2012. The custom of scheduling multiple intentions at two weekend Masses will continue. Each weekend, one Mass in Portuguese and one Mass in English, will be available for more than one family or person to schedule a Mass. The Mass will change each weekend so that there will be more options for the parishioners. As has been the custom there will be only one intention accepted during the weekday Masses and the other two weekend Masses.
The scheduling of Intentions for the two Sanctuary Lamps, one located in the church and the other in the chapel, are also available to be booked for any week in 2012. The lamp is lit for the intention or in memory of a loved one for a full week and may be booked anytime during 2012 until all weeks have been completely booked.
Marcação das intenções para as Missas e Lâmpadas de 2012
Principiámos a receber intenções para as Missas do ano de 2012 desde o dia 8 de Dezembro de 2011e continuaremos a recebê-las durante todo o ano de 2012. Como é costume continuamos a marcar múltiplas intenções em duas das Missas do fim de semana. Em cada fim de semana, haverá a possibilidade de receber intenções de várias pessoas ou famílias, para uma das Missas em Português e para uma outra em Inglês. Todos os fins de semana alternar-se-á o horário da Missa, para oferecer mais opções e maior conveniência aos paroquianos. Como no passado, durante a semana, só se poderá marcar uma intenção por missa, assim como para as duas restantes Missas do fim de semana.
Também aceitamos marcações para as duas lâmpadas do Santuário, a que está na Igreja e a outra na Capela, para qualquer semana do ano de 2012. Acendem-se as lâmpadas durante uma semana inteira pela intenção pedida ou em memória de algum ente-querido. Poderão fazer essa marcação durante todo o ano de 2012 até que estejam preenchidas todas as vagas.
