UNITED INTERFAITH ACTION (UIA)
UIA is a joining of Catholic and Protestant Churches in Fall River to work to change structures to help the poor and needy of the city along with other groups reaching out to the poor.
Last June, 400 people came to St. Michael’s Hall to ask City Officials for more safety on North Main St. and for repairs in North Park. The meeting brought about many good results.
UIA is now working on helping the city to get more jobs. There is a letter at the entrances of the church asking Meditech and the Mass. Historical Society to resolve their differences so that a new building can be made in Freetown. This new building of Meditech will bring 800 more jobs to the city.
Parishioners are invited to sign one of these letters. These letters will be presented to the heads of these two organizations to express our concern. It is hoped that Saint Michael’s Church can present 200 letters and St. Joseph’s Church to present another 200 letters.

A home rule petition to change the language of the legislation to allow Meditech and Mr. Pappalardo, if he decides to continue with his plans to build on that site, to report to a different state agency, and not to the Massachusetts Historical Commission. The Meditech building proposal was voted on by the Freetown voters, Thursday, 02/09/2012. UIA – United Interfaith Action
On Tuesday, December 7, 2010 the thirteen members of the Parish’s UIA met to share some of their interviews with parishioners. Scott Spencer led the meeting.
The UIA Committee of the Parish has completed over 100 “one on ones”. They have had house meetings when more than fifty people were interviewed. Scott Spencer said that St. Michael’s Parish has exceeded any other church in its “one on ones”. Congratulations St. Michael’s UIA!
Scott Spencer explained that we have had more than enough “one on ones” to get a sense of what the people are thinking about the issues that confront their lives. Now the members have to decide on one area of concern. It is important to understand that only one aspect of the problem will be studied and acted upon. Each issue (unemployment, violence, education, youth etc.) is so vast that it would be impossible to work on the whole issue.
Scott Spencer also worked with St. Joseph’s Parish. Scott asked our group if they were willing to join with Saint Joseph’s group of UIA. All the members of the group welcomed the idea of working with Saint Joseph’s Parish. Scott Spencer explained that by joining together we will have more strength and effect.
Scott Spencer also worked with other congregations in Fall River. He has worked with the community of people from Brazil at St. Mary’s Cathedral. He has worked with the Spanish community at St. Mary’s Cathedral. First Baptist Church and Holy Spirit Episcopal Church have also worked with Scott Spencer.
These communities of the English speaking members of St. Mary’s Cathedral, First Baptist and Holy Spirit have been working on public safety. They had one hundred and fifty people attend an action meeting to speak about this issue with city officials.
United Interfaith Action has been working in our parish and in Saint Joseph’s Parish for the last year. Our parishes have been very good in responding in charity to the needs of others by presently contributing to the Catholic Charities Appeal. Parishioners of both parishes work each month in our soup kitchen. Both parishes work for the poor through our Saint Vincent de Paul Societies. Although we are very good in works of charity, we are not good in works of justice which is to try to change structures which help to keep people poor and vulnerable.
Sometimes we may feel overwhelmed at seeing all of the things that are wrong with our society and may feel powerless. United Interfaith Action is working with ten parishes and congregations in New Bedford and is working with seven congregations and parishes in Fall River. United Interfaith Action brings people together to share their concerns. A particular concern usually surfaces that is the most common concern. A certain area of that concern is studied to see what realistically can be done to change. People gather together in large numbers called an “Action” to speak to officials about that concern so that the concern can be heard and acted upon.
Saint Michael and Saint Joseph have been meeting for many months to hear what parishioners are feeling are the problems of the area. Through “one on one” meetings, people have surfaced the concern of public safety and youth. The UIA committee which consists of twenty-two people of both parishes is now studying certain aspects of these areas of concern. The UIA committee members have been meeting with city officials to learn more about these areas of concern.
The final step was the Action that took place on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at Saint Michael School hall. Your presence in large numbers spoke very strongly to the concerns of the youth and public safety to our city officials. (Our goal was to get 400 people to the Action.) About 400 people attended the meeting that took place in Saint Michael’s School Hall.
The city officials who were invited were visited by members of our UIA before the Action meeting. They presented the agenda of the Action meeting to them. They submitted questions for the officials to review and answer at the Action. They elicited support from the officials to work with concrete steps to help resolve the concerns.
Members of the UIA of New Bedford and the other congregations of UIA in Fall River (St Mary’s Cathedral, Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, and First Baptist Church) were with us at this Action on June 14, 2011.
After the research phase of the concerns were completed by our UIA, the details about what the concerns were; that made the agenda of the Action meeting, are listed below.

Issues presented:
Traffic safety in front of Saint Joseph’s Church
The UIA committee of Saint Joseph and Saint Michael met with the traffic department of the city to get a cone which is used in the middle of the street when Masses are being held. Also a sign to warn drivers to slow down was put further away from the Church. At the Action meeting the Chief of Police was asked to provide an officer to be available to ticket any driver who is speeding in front of the Church. The changing of Hood Street to two way traffic will also alleviate the amount of traffic on North Main St.
A representative of the Police Chief committed to painting the cross walks at Saint Joseph’s Church and providing a police car to monitor traffic at the times of Masses on the weekend at Saint Joseph’s.
Clean up of North Park
On Saturday, June 18, 2011 young people and their parents were encouraged to gather at North Park for a Clean-Up.
On the Saturday after the Action Meeting fifty young people and parents went to North Park to clean the debris. The City of Fall River Park Department provided barrels and garbage bags. They helped clean the heavy brush and the fallen limbs from the trees.
Young people shared at the Action meeting about their hopes for North Park. The Mayor also met with a group of young people after the Action meeting to hear their concerns about North Park.
The Mayor committed to repairing the skate board rink at the North Park; save the ball field and the basketball court when the new school is built; and improve the lighting in the Park.
Summer jobs for youth
The bill that would provide funding for summer jobs was presented in the State Legislature in July. We asked Senator Rodriques to vote for this bill so that young people would benefit.
Update on the July Bill: The bill was passed and an increase in funds to the Shannon Grant allowed for an increase of allocated funds to Fall River and other cities. Click the link below to get more information on where the allocation of funds went throughout the state.

Parishioners of both Saint Michael and Saint Joseph were asked to come in large numbers. Members of other UIA groups from New Bedford were present at the Action meeting to support our concerns. The whole Action meeting was translated into Portuguese through head phones by interpreters.
Everyone on the UIA Committee agreed that the whole effort was a tremendous success and a good beginning for other ways for our parishes to reach out to the bigger community.
UIA – Unidos em Inter-acção através da Fé
Na Terça-feira, dia 7 de Novembro, os membros do Comité UIA da Paróquia, reuniram-se a o fim de partilharem com os paroquianos os resultados de algumas das suas entrevistas.Scott Spencer foi o moderador da reunião.
O Comité da Paróquia já completou mais de 100 entrevistas individuais. Também fizeram reuniões em casa, onde mais de 50 pessoas foram entrevistadas. O Scott disse que a Paróquia de S. Miguel ultrapassou todas as outras Igrejas no número de entrevistas individuais que realizou. Parabéns ao Comité de S. Miguel que tem a seu cargo o Movimento UIA.
O Scott também explicou que já tínhamos um número de entrevistas mais que suficiente para fazermos uma ideia do que pensa o povo acerca das preocupações com que se confrontam na vida. Agora os membros terão que decidir e escolher uma dessas preocupações. É importante perceber que para entrarmos em acção teremos de nos dedicar e estudar apenas um aspecto do problema. Cada uma das questões (desemprego, violência, educação ou os problemas dos jovens) é tão vasta que seria impossível atacar o problema todo de uma vez. Apenas uma área do problema será atribuído ao nosso Comité.
O Scott Spencer também trabalha com a Paróquia de S. José, aonde um grupo de paroquianos está a principiar as entrevistas individuais. O Scott perguntou se estaríamos dispostos a trabalhar juntamente com a Paróquia de S. José. A ideia foi muito bem recebida por todos, porque juntos seremos mais fortes e mais eficientes.
Na nossa próxima reunião que será na Quarta-feira, dia 5 de Janeiro, às 7:00 horas da noite, na Capela, os dois Comités, o de S. Miguel e o de S. José, iniciarão o processo de escolher umas das áreas para se entrar em acção.
O Scott também está a trabalhar com outras Congregações da área de Fall River. Ele trabalha com uma comunidade Brasileira e outra Espanhola da Catedral de Santa Maria e ainda com a Primeira Igreja Baptista e a Igreja Episcopal do Divino Espírito Santo. As comunidades de língua Inglesa daquelas Igrejas têm vindo a debruçar-se sobre a Segurança Pública. Eles conseguiram reunir 150 pessoas numa das suas reuniões para discutirem o tema da Segurança Pública com os autarcas, oficiais e representantes da cidade.
Há já um ano que o Movimento UIA tem vindo a trabalhar com a nossa e com a Paróquia de S. José. Os nossos paroquianos têm sido muito caridosos na sua resposta às necessidades do próximo, a avaliar pelas contribuições feitas presentemente para o Apelo das Caridades Católicas. Paroquianos das duas paróquias trabalham todos os meses no Banco Alimentar e no auxílio prestado aos pobres através da Sociedade de S. Vicente de Paulo. Embora tenhamos agido bem, na prática de actos de caridade, temos agido pior quando se fala em mudar as estruturas que contribuem para que os pobres continuem pobres e vulneráveis.
Às vezes chegamos a sentir-nos confundidos e frustrados ao vermos todos os males da nossa sociedade e sentirmos cá dentro que não temos poder algum para mudar as coisas. O UIA está a trabalhar com 10 paróquias e outras congregações de New Bedford e com 7 congregações e paróquias aqui da área de Fall River. O seu intuito é juntar as pessoas a fim de partilharem as suas preocupações. Geralmente vem sempre ao de cima, uma preocupação particular, a que é mais comum a todos. É estudada uma certa área dessa preocupação, para se ver o que na realidade se pode fazer para mudar as coisas. Há reuniões chamadas “Ações” a que assistem um grande número de pessoas para falarem com os representantes oficiais da comunidade, acerca de uma certa preocupação, para que a situação possa ser ouvida e discutida e o que se poderá ser posto em prática para a resolver.
S. Miguel e S. José já se vêm a reunir há vários meses para fazerem uma ideia daquilo que sentem os nossos paroquianos e o que julgam ser os problemas da nossa área. Durante os encontros individuais as pessoas trouxeram à superficie o problema da segurança pública e o dos nossos jovens. O Comité do Movimento UIA, que é formado por 22 membros das duas paróquias, está presentemente a estudar certos aspectos dessas preocupações e têm tido encontros com as entidades oficiais da nossa cidade para estudarem e ficarem a conhecer melhor as áreas problemáticas em questão.
O último passo a dar será a próxima reunião “Ação” que terá lugar no dia 14 de Junho no Salão da Escola de S. Miguel. A reunião terá início às 7:00 horas da noite. Pedimos que venham mesmo que seja só para acrescer o número de pessoas presentes. Não terão que dizer ou fazer nada. A presença de muita gente só por si falará bem alto e mostrará aos nossos representantes a muita importância que damos aos problemas dos nossos jovens e à falta de segurança pública que se faz sentir. (A nossa meta seria ter 400 pessoas a assistir à reuniào – Ação) Assistiram à reunião cerca de 400 pessoas, a qual teve lugar no Salão da Igreja de S. Miguel.
Os representantes oficiais convidados terão um encontro com os membros do nosso Comité, antes da reunião, onde lhes será entregue a agenda da reunião e um apanhado das perguntas a que serão convidados a responder. Ser-lhes-á pedido o apoio necessário para se poder trabalhar passo a passo e de modo concreto a fim de se resolver esses problemas.
Depois de completa a fase de pesquisa nas áreas de maior preocupação daremos mais pormenores sobre os assuntos que aparecerão na agenda da reunião “Ação”.
Os membros do Movimento UIA da área de New Bedford e de outras congregações do UIA de Fall River (Catedral de Santa Maria, Igreja Episcopal do Divino Espírito Santo e Primeira Igreja Batista) já se comprometeram a estar conosco nessa reunião “Ação” do dia 14 de Junho.
Agenda pela Reunião-Acção do Movimento UIA
14 de Junho, no Salão da Escola de S. Miguel às 6:45 da noite
Os convidados vão ser: o Presidente da Câmara, Flanagan; o Chefe da Polícia Racine e o Senador Michael Rodriques.
Assuntos a tratar:
Segurança do trânsito em frente à Igreja de S. José.
O Comité do UIA das Igrejas de S. José e S. Miguel tiveram um encontro com o departamento de trânsito da cidade para adquirirem um cone a ser colocado no meio da rua enquanto as Missas estão a ser celebradas e um sinal para ser colocado a certa distância da Igreja, avisando os condutores para diminuirem a velocidade. Durante a Reunião-Acção será pedido ao Chefe da Polícia um guarda oficial para multar as pessoas que não obedeçam ao limite de velocidade na zona da Igreja. A mudança da Rua Hood de sentido único para dois sentidos, também aleviará a quantidade de carros a circular pelo Main St.
Um representante do Chefe da Polícia compromoteu-se a pintar as passadeiras em frente à Igreja de S. José e a fornecer um carro da polícia para monitorizar o trânsito durante os horários das Missas do fim de semana.
Limpeza do Parque Norte (North Park)
No Sábado, dia 18 de Junho, encorajamos os jovens, acompanhados pelos pais, para se reunirem no North Park com o fim de lhe fazerem uma limpeza.
No Sábado após a reunião “Ação” 50 jovens, acompanhados pelos pais, foram fazer uma limpeza ao North Park. O Departamento responsável pela manutenção dos Parques da cidade de Fall River forneceu os barris e os sacos de lixo e ajudaram a limpar e a roçar os ramos secos caídos das árvores.
Alguns jovens estarão presentes na Reunião-Acção para partilharem a esperança do que possa vir a ser o North Park.
Depois da reunião o Presidente da Câmara reuniu-se com um grupo de jovens para ouvir as suas preocupações sobre o Parque.
O Presidente da Câmara comprometeu-se a reparar o recinto destinado ao uso de skate boards no North Park; a proteger o campo de jogos e o de basquetebol quando for construída a nova escola e a melhorar a iluminação do Parque. Depois da reunião o Presidente da Câmara reuniu-se com um grupo de jovens para ouvir as suas preocupações sobre o Parque.
Trabalhos de Verão para jovens
A petição para que sejam dispensados os fundos necessários para os trabalhos de Verão, será submetida no mês de Julho à Legislatura Estadual. Pedimos ao Senador Rodriques para votar nesse projecto de lei para beneficiar os jovens.
Actualização do Projeto Lei do mês de Julho: O Projeto Lei foi aprovado e foi autorizado um aumento nos fundos da concessão do Estado intitulada “Shannon Grant” permitindo assim um aumento no auxílio atribuído a Fall River e a outras cidades. Se precisar mais informações sobre a distribuição desses subsídios pelo Estado é só procurar e carregar na página eletrónica.

Pedimos aos paroquianos das Igrejas de S. Miguel e S. José para virem assistir a essa reunião em grande número. Alguns membros do Moviemto UIA de New Bedford estarão presentes como um sinal de apoio às nossas preocupações. Durante a reunião haverá intérpretes, munidos de microfones, para traduzirem para Português todos os assuntos debatidos.
Todos os membros do Comité UIA concordaram que todo o esforco feito tinha sido um tremendo sucesso e um bom início para que outras paróquias principiem também a pensar numa comunidade mais alargada.
